Ludwig zu Stolberg was the third son of the reigning Count Botho zu Stolberg and his wife Anna née Countess of Eppstein-Königstein. He was born at Schloss Stolberg. His siblings were, Count Wolfgang of Stolberg , the Quedlinburg Abbess Anna II, Stolberg , Count Heinrich of Stolberg , Countess Katharina von Henneberg, Count Albrecht Georg zu Stolberg and provost Christoph Stolberg .
As a fourth Child of 12 siblings, he was from the age of nine by his uncle Eberhard IV of Eppstein-Königstein in Königstein im Taunus educated. Louis studied at the University of Wittenberg , where he already in 1521 the doctrine of Martin Luther accepted. The spread and consolidation of the Reformation was now one of his missions in life. He was the Council of the Emperor Charles V and remained at the successors of Ferdinand I and Maximilian II in this office. Often he was sent abroad in, so including the Queen Elizabeth to England and to the Spanish court. By Count Eberhard IV of Eppstein-Königstein he was appointed heir, and from 1527 served as co-regent with his uncle, Eberhard; Emperor Charles V in 1528 recognized testament to that. The succession was on 25 May 1535 one. In his territory, he led the Reformation in 1540 and set a Lutheran pastor, but did not participate in the War of Schmalkalden .

He was married with Walburga of Wied († 1578), daughter of John III. Wied, († 1533) and Elisabeth of Nassau-Dillenburg (1488-1559).
His eldest daughter, Catherine married the last counts of Wertheim , Michael III. III in 1556 as the noble family of Michael. by Wertheim died without male descendants, Ludwig arrived at Stolberg in the possession of the County of Wertheim together with the Wertheim castle . [1] . Catherine married in 1566, Count Philipp II von Eberstein (1523-1589).
Ludwig's second oldest daughter Elizabeth was Graf Dietrich Manderscheid and Virneburg married. When he died in 1593, she married a year later, Baron Wilhelm von Créhange. Louis Botho only son grew up at the court of the Duke of Bavaria, lived and died in 1568 in Quedlinburg in front of his father.
The youngest daughter Anna to Stolberg (April 13, 1548 † November 2, 1599) married on 2 September 1566 Ludwig III, Count zu Loewenstein-Wertheim (February 17, 1530 † March 13, 1611).

As Louis had no male offspring except Botho, fell to his death, the King County stone to his youngest brother, Christoph Stolberg, provost of Halberstadt. His wife Walburga received city office and cellars Butzbach as Wittum . [2] After the death of Christopher in 1581 annexed the Office Kurmainz Königstein, the Stolberg remained the rule parts to Ortenberg and Gedern and shares in Butzbach and coins mountain .
His son Ludwig III. by Lowenstein took over after over 20 years and continuing violent clashes in 1598 the county of Wertheim.
