About Ludwig Erdwin Seyler

Biography

Hamburg merchant and banker, co-owner (1788–1836) and head (from 1790) of Joh. Berenberg, Gossler & Co. (Berenberg Bank). Member from 1813 and President 1817–1818 of the Commerz-Deputation. Member (ex officio) of the Erbgesessene Bürgerschaft (Parliament).

A son of the renowned Swiss-born theatre director Abel Seyler and Sophie Elisabeth Andreae, he grew up in Hanover with his maternal uncle J.G.R. Andreae following his mother's death in 1764. He married Anna Henriette Gossler, daughter of the prominent Hamburg bankers Johann Hinrich Gossler and Elisabeth Berenberg.

Ludwig Seyler and Anna Henriette Gossler had seven children, in order of birth

  1. Sophie Henriette Elisabeth ("Betty") Seyler (1789–1837), married to Hamburg businessman Gerhard von Hosstrup, who founded the Hamburger Börsenhalle in 1804
  2. Johann Hinrich Seyler
  3. Emilie ("Emmy") Seyler, married to the physician Ludwig Friedrich Christian Homann
  4. Louise Auguste Seyler, married to Gerhard von Hosstrup after the death of her sister
  5. Maria ("Molly") Seyler
  6. Louise ("Wischen") Seyler (1799–1849), married to ship broker Ernst Friedrich Pinckernelle (1787–1868), whose sons founded the G. & J. E. Pinckernelle insurance broker firm
