Lutheda raised Henry Irwin, Bertha, Bernice and Grace after their mother, Julia Geneva Ball, was sent to the New Hampshire Asylum for the Insane due to diabetes, which left untreated, develops into paranoid delusions. She locked her kids in the closet, unfed for days, afraid that William Henry Jebb would take them away, other times she thought they were responsible for William Henry leaving her, and abused them.
