About Luther M Buss

Luther M. Buss, of Mason City, died Sunday (March 23, 2003) at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN. Funeral services will be held 1:30 P.M. Wednesday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 North Pennsylvania, with the Rev. Dr. John “Jack” Gannett of the St. John’s Episcopal Church officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery with full military rites by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 PM Tuesday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home and one hour before services. Memorials may be given to the Luther M. Buss Memorial Fund. Luther was born September 27, 1912 in Chapin, Iowa the son of Evert and Emma (Busch) Buss. He attended rural schools in the Chapin area and moved to Mason City in 1922 and graduated Mason City High School in 1932. He served in the U. S. Army during WW II and received a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. He was married to Helen Mae Mott on Jan. 14, 1946 at St. John’s Episcopal, Mason City. She preceded him in death in Feb of 1967. He was married to Dorothy (Spangler) Carlson on Feb. 25, 1969 in Goldfield, Iowa. Luther worked for the Interstate Power Co for 25 years as a meter repairer and tester. He also worked several years for the Very Best Bakery in Clear Lake. He was a member of the St. John’s Episcopal Church, where he was head usher for 15 years. He was also a member of the V.F.W., D.A.V., American Legion, AmVets, Harding Lodge #649 A.F. & A.M. and High Twelve. He was a longtime member of the Senior Citizens Center. For 26 years he was involved with the Boy Scouts receiving the Silver Beaver and was a member of the Order of Arrow. Survivors are his wife Dorothy L. Buss, Mason City Son – Timothy “Tim” Buss and wife Diane, Mason City Step-daughters – Donna Jean Flumerfelt and husband Don, Eagle Grove Emma Jean Carlson, Olin, Iowa Step-sons – Ole Carlson and wife Janice, Hampton, MN Jerry Carlson, Des Moines, IA Grandsons – Nikolaus, Kristofer and Zachary Buss all of Mason City Great grandson – Preston Buss Step-Grandchildren – Denise Lenarz, Dan Flumerfelt, John Carlson and Courtney Carlson Step-Great Granddaughter – Olivia Flumerfelt Brother – Ralph Buss and wife Harriette, Eugene, OR Numerous Nieces and Nephews and many little neighborhood children whom he enjoyed.

Preceded by his parents, first wife Helen, Son in infancy, 4 brothers, Jack, Ernie, Lawrence and Everette, 3 sisters, Lois Lowe, Ethel St. Amand and Carrie Heitland and l great grandson Zaine Nikolaus Buss
