Lydia Harris Hines

Lydia Hines

This daughter of John Hines, Jr. (1760) and Ann Scarborough (d/1821), was apparently born in Southampton County, Virginia. She was married in 1783 to Samuel Scarborough, Jr. and moved with her husband to Wake County, N. C. in 1788, settling in the Riley Hill community. He served in the Virginia Militia in the Revolution as a private, and received a pension in Wake County, for his service. At the time of his death, he owned eight slaves, who were sold for a total of $ 1,799.50. He left his sons John H. and Hiram farms of equal value, and an apple orchard to share.

The children included:

1. John H., born c.1800 and died c.1892. Married Betsy Eliza-

beth Horton, who was born 1807 and died 1898. They

moved to Neuse, North Carolina (near Raleigh). In 1850, he

purchased 272 acres near Rolesville, on which he lived until

his death. Their children included:

a. James Howell, born April 2, 1827; died April 16, 1910

b. William Thaddeus, born January 25, 1829; died April

13, 1896

c. Maize Clark, born September 18, 1830; died January 18,

1918

d. Sarah Heelan, born June 22, 1832; died 1865

e. Charles Paterson, died in infancy

f. Andrew Jackson, born July 24, 1836; died January 20,

1916

g. Thomas, born May 29, 1839; died in infancy

h. Nancy Myrah, born September 21, 1840

i. John Elizabeth, born December 4, 1844; died January

23, 1931

j. Edwin Jefferson, born June 3, 1847; died May 13, 1928

k. Stephen Hines, born September 4, 1842, of whom more

following

2. Hiram, married Calley Liles and remained in the Riley Hill

area for his lifetime. Descendants include the Wendell Scar-

boroughs, and Dr. Walter Avery Scarborough

3. Nancy, who died young

4. David E., moved to the far west
