About Mabel Adeline Friestad
NAPOLEON — Mabel Friestad, 92, Napoleon, died March 21, 2012, at the Napoleon Care Center. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 24, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Kintyre. Graveside services will be held at the Tell Cemetery, rural Kintyre, prior to the service.
Mabel Adeline Feigum was born May 3, 1919, on a farm southwest of Napoleon in Logan County. She was the fifth of eight children born on the family farm to Elias and Christina (Kroeber) Feigum. Her father expected his children to make their own way after eighth grade, so Mabel worked in a restaurant and as a clerk in a store in Napoleon. After leaving home, one of her first jobs was at a dentist's office in Minneapolis, where she also was the maid at a fancy house. Mabel later returned to North Dakota and worked at a restaurant in Robinson.
Mabel married Juel Friestad Sept. 23, 1940, at Fargo. They lived in Fargo for a short time, before returning to the Kintyre area purchasing their farm one mile southeast of Kintyre. They lived there until Juel's death in 1980, and Mabel continued to live there, until moving to an apartment in Napoleon in June 2011 and to the Napoleon Care Center in September 2011. Her goal after moving was to return to her beloved farm, where she loved talking on the phone, baking and visits from her children, grandchildren and friends. She loved tending her flowers and having her own space. She will always be remembered for her never-ending pot of coffee, her famous donuts and her angel food cakes, both of which were sent on the road many times.
Mabel is survived by three sons, Dennis (Helen) Friestad, Valley City, Soren (Terry) Friestad, Fargo, and Doug (Sheila) Friestad, Kintyre; one daughter, Judy (Jerry) Woods, Bellevue, Neb.; 14 grandchildren, Kristi Grabenstein (Marcel Balcarek), Kara (Mark) Hopkins, Brenda (Sean) Nohavec, Karla (Kirby) Robb, Mark Friestad, Jill (Eric) Bergstedt, Brian (Jacquie) Woods, Monte Woods, Joel (Amy) Woods, Dawn Shamblin, Heather (Brant) Flemmer, Jamie (Chris) Sperle, Sara (Caleb) Ketterling and Lacy (Woody) Woodrow; 29 great-grandchildren, Jennifer (Paul) Guinotte, Peyton Hopkins, Pierce Hopkins, Seth Nohavec, Chase Nohavec, Ethan Nohavec, Jacob Robb, Molly Robb, Megan Robb, Rachael Bergstedt, Martin Bergstedt, Natalie Bergstedt, Julia Bergstedt, Ava Woods, Colin Woods, Anna Woods, Madeline Woods, Savannah Shamblin, Perri Shamblin, Braeden Flemmer, Mia Flemmer, Dylan Bitz, Kayden Sperle, Kendall Sperle, Emma Ketterling, Sophie Ketterling, Eli Ketterling, Evan Woodrow-Fischer and Owen Woodrow; one great-great-granddaughter, Chesney Guinotte; one sister, Eleanor Hochhalter, Bakersfield, Calif.; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
