Mabel A. Norby, 99, Barnesville, died Tuesday, March 19, 2002, in Barnesville Good Samaritan Center.

Mabel Thorson was born July 29, 1902, near Eldred, Minn., where she grew up and attended school. She then attended the University of Minnesota, Crookston, and later worked for the college as a secretary. She then lived in Ada, Minn., where she worked as a bank auditor. In 1932, she moved to Fargo, where she worked for Socony Vacum. On June 7, 1936, she married Julian Norby in Moorhead. They lived in Barnesville, where they owned and operated Norby Department Store. She retired in 1969 and entered the care center in 1996.

She is survived by a daughter, Andrea (Richard) Sylvester, Barnesville; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
