About Mahendra Nath Kaul, OBE
Broadcaster and restaurateur. Kaul was born in Kashmir, and began broadcasting in 1948 for Radio Kashmir, and shortly afterwards, All India Radio. In the 1960s he moved to London and began a broadcasting career for the BBC, spanning many years, writing speeches for Richard Nixon and forming a friendship with then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. From 1997 until his death, Kaul was also a prominent restaurateur, opening the UK's first Tandoori restaurant, Gaylord, in Fitzrovia in 1966. He was also chairman of India's Restaurants Limited from 1997 until his death in 2018, aged 95.
Kaul received an OBE in 1975 fro services to race relations, and a Commonwealth Green Pennant from HRH The Duke of Edinburgh.
