About Maj. John Brant Fairchild
In 1865, after traveling the lecture circuit, Olive Oatman married John Brant Fairchild, a former Texas trail driver and, Biffle pointed out, self-styled "capitalist." The couple settled in Sherman, where Fairchild founded the City Bank of Sherman. Together, they adopted a daughter, Mary Elizabeth "Mamie" Fairchild, and passed quiet lives in a large Victorian mansion.
After years of national attention and the lecture circuit, Oatman settled into a quiet life. Clearly, however, her past still haunted the couple. While she donned the veil to cover her famous tattoo, Biffle pointed out that her husband devoted himself to tracking down copies of Stratton's book and burning them.
