GRIFFIN, Ga., July 22 (AP)—One of Georgia's best‐known newspaper publishers, Quimby Melton Sr., died here last night. He was 86 years old.
He was long publisher of The Griffin Daily News. After he was graduated from Emory University, he began his newspaper career as a copy boy in the sports department of The Baltimore American.
He worked as a reporter for The Birmingham (Ala.) Ledger, and later turned to teaching and coaching football at Allen Academy in Bryan, Tex. He returned to Georgia and was editor of The Americus Times‐Recorder, and city editor of The Atlanta Constitution before serving in World War I as a major.
He later became publisher of The Birmingham Ledger and subsequently publisher of The Florida Metropolis, which later became The Jacksonville Journal.
Survivors include his son, Quimby Jr.. editor and publisher of The Griffin Daily News, and four grandchildren.
