The furnishing of a substitute was entirely legal and periods of duty were of short durations during periods of threatened security by the Indians. Aab 1855 Act of Congress provided bounty land and pensions to soldiers of the War of 1812. Name misspellings in military records delayed granting them until after conclusion of the War Between the Staters. The pension and bounty land was not granted until 18975 becauseof Federal repressive measures against citizens of the former Confederacy.

Major E. Barbee is next found in Montgomery County, Tennessee in July 18914 where he witnessed a deed conveying to his father, Joseph, one negro slave.
