https://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=97782410
Charles Farnsworth was a major in the 1st Connecticut Cavalry. He was part of the force that was following Lee and the Confederate army as they tried to cross the Potomac and escape back south. While commanding the 1st Connecticut near Halltown, West Virginia, he led a charge that overran the picket line of the 13th Virginia Cavalry and was seriously wounded. Farnsworth and twenty-four of his men were captured.
He was taken to Winchester, Virginia, and held briefly in the courthouse where his name is found in graffiti on the courthouse walls. (The courthouse is now the Shenandoah Valley Civil War Museum.) With other officers, he was transported to Richmond, Virginia, and imprisoned in Libby Prison. He was exchanged on March 14, 1864, and due to poor health, resigned from the army.
