About Major Esther Virginia DeVaux
She graduated from St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing, and attended Columbia University. She had a distinguished military career, achieving the rank of Major in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps. During World War II, she started the Army Basic Training Program for Nurses, and also taught numerous medical corpsmen. Following the war, she was Chief Nurse at the 900-bed Port of Embarcation Hospital in Bremerhaven, Germany. She resided in the Hartford area almost 50 years. Although she worked briefly as an R.N. at St. Francis Hospital, she directed her energies to being a wife, mother and homemaker.
