About Major General Charles Gardiner Helmick

Charles Helmick graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Class of 1913. He retired as a U.S. Army Major General. He served during World War I and World War II.

During World War II he received the Army Distinguished Service Medal: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Brigadier General Charles Gardiner Helmick (ASN: 0-3606), United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility as V Corps Artillery Commander during the campaigns of Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe, December 1944 to May 1945. He also recieved the Silver Star: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Brigadier General Charles Gardiner Helmick (ASN: 0-3606), United States Army, for gallantry in action while attached to Headquarters, V Corps, on the coast of France, on 6 June 1944. During World War I he received a Silver Star Citation: By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Captain (Field Artillery) Charles G. Helmick (ASN: 0-3606), United States Army, is cited for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Captain Helmick distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Battery B, 15th Field Artillery Regiment, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action at Bannoncourt, France, 14 April 1918, and by his brilliant leadership.
