About Major Wilhelm Georg Bach
Wilhelm Bach was a veteran of the First World War and a British POW. After that war, he married, raised a family and became a Lutheran Minister in Mannheim. He served in Africa in the Second World War. He was promoted to Major and awarded the Knight's Cross. He defended the Halfaya Pass until supply lines were cut. When supplies ran out, he surrendered on 17 Jan 1942. He was brought to Canada as a POW. He died soon after in a hospital in Toronto of cancer. (From Rommel's Desert Commanders, by Samuel W. Mitcham Jr., Greenwood Publishing Group Inc., 2007.) In 1970, he was disinterred from Mickle Memorial Cemetery, Gravenhurst, Ontario and buried in Woodland Cemetery in Kitchener. The servicemen were buried two to a grave, according to the headstone. He was buried along with Hans Dieter John.
