Biography

"13. (8.) 1647 Malachi Browning late of Watertowne, N.E.: gent. constituted Capt. Robt Harding of Boston his true and lawfull Atturney granting him power to compound & agree wth Mr. Tho: Browning of Mauldon in Essex clerke for his title in reversion unto all those lands in Ratchford hundred in Essex wherein the sd Malachie hath an estate in Reverdion,"[1]

Malachi Browning married Mary (Collier) at Boston by 1636. They had two known children:

Susanna m. William Vinson Daniel may have been a clergyman. MALACHI BROWNING was born about 1600 in Maldon, Essex, England, the son of William Browning and Elizabeth Vernon. His father died April 23, 1635 at St. Botolph Bish, London, Middlesex, England.

The dates for the Browning family were confusing, even though a number of researchers agreed with those dates. Most researchers indicated Malachi married Mary Collier May 22, 1628 at St. Helen, London, Middlesex, England. Mary was born about 1604 in London, Middlesex, England, the daughter of Thomas and Susanna Collier. Malachi and Mary (Collier) Browning were the parents of at least three children; one son and two daughters.

The problem is that most researchers indicated that one of their daughters, Marie, was born in America in 1625. Marie was born about 1625 in Edgartown, Massachusetts, but this is three years before her parents were married. Either the dates are in error or they had Marie in America and then went back to England to be married, returning to Massachusetts. \ Malachi Browning was one of the Watertown contingent of first comers. He had been an owner of a home stall in that place in 1642, and probably emigrated to New England some two years before that date. He was from Maldon, County Essex, England, a few miles distant from Baddow Magna, the home of John Pease, and Bromfield, possibly the residence of the Vincents prior to their emigration. Malachi Browning and his brother Jeremy were appointed in 1630 administrators of the estate of their sister Sarah Armestronge als Browninge of Maldon, and in 1647, after his arrival in this country, he gave a power of attorney to a party to agree with Mr. Thomas Browning of Maldon in Essex, Clerk {i. e., minister), concerning his reversionary title to lands in the Ratchford Hundred in same county. These clues enabled the author to make a definite search for his family antecedents, and he had the registers of the two parishes of St. Mary, and All Saints and St. Peter searched for Browning records. The result as given below is a satisfactory solution although the name of Malachi does not appear, yet that of his brother Jeremy and 'A Joanna Watson was a member of the Church in Salem in 1636, but there is no evidence to associate this person with the wife of our settler.

· 1630: Malachi and his brother Jeremy were appointed administrators of their sister’s estate – Sarah Armestronge als Broninge of Maldon

· April 23, 1635: Named in his father’s will

· June 2, 1640: Per the annals of Edgartown, Massachusetts “Mr Browning for seling strong water was fined 5s witn: to ha: 28 of it." (Record, Court of Assistants, I, 282.) There was no other Browning in Massachusetts as yet come to light, and taken in connection with a subsequent entry it is entirely probable this relates to our Malachi Browning.

· 1640-1642: Malachy Browning (also called Brown), Gentleman listed with a homestead lot in Watertown proper

· April 1645: Signed as one of the appraisers of John Simon’s estate in Massachusetts.

· October 23, 1644: Letter of Attorney was made to him to receive an annuity per year to be paid by the commissioners of Chelmsford

· 1646: Moved to Martha’s Vineyard

· 1647: Called himself ‘late of Watertown’ as he had then become a resident of the Vineyard

· 1647: He made Captain Robert Harding of Boston his agent to arrange with Mr. Thomas Browning of Maulden in Ratchford Hundred, Essex, England {i. e., minister), concerning his reversionary title to lands in the Ratchford Hundred in same county.

· May 8, 1653: Given a share in a planting field (Edgartown Records, I, 172)

· September 27, 1653: he died at Mr. Robert Scott’s house in Boston (Boston Town Records, Vol. 1, page 48)

Malachi Browning had a mansion seat" a little distance south of Burying Hill fronting the harbor. In what manner it passed from his estate into the possession of Thomas Trapp is not known, but it may indicate some relationship. Apparently the widow only had her "thirds," which she deeded as a gift to her grandson, Thomas Vincent. The widow survived until Sept. 7, 1672, and the inventory of her estate was administered by her son-in-law Vinson. Her daughter Susanna makes several references to her property rights in England, and it is presumed to relate to the estate in Essex to which the father had made claim as above related.

He was an owner of a large book shop in Boston, died November 27, 1653 in Boston, Massachusetts about 53 years old while his wife, Mary (Collier) Browning died September 7, 1672 in Watertown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts about 68 years old. https://www.ancestry.com/mediaui-viewer/tree/7202615/person/6352791...
