RITES HELD FOR MRS. MALINDA W. AIKEN-BOWERS:

85 Year Old Citizen Dies Tuesday –

Mrs. Malinda W. Aiken-Bowers, 85, died at 8:10 a. m. Tuesday at her residence, 121 South Union St., following a week's confinement to her bed. She had been in ill health for 15 months. Malinda W. Thurston was born April 1, 1867, at Villanow, Ga., a daughter of Leroy and Carolyn Stansell Thurston. She was married January 22, 1872, to the late Samuel Fletcher Aiken. They came to Texas in Sept. 1902, locating at Howe, where they remained for a year. For the next thirteen years they lived in various places in Grayson County where the Rev. Mr. Aiken, a minister, preached at numbers of Baptist churches and in many school buildings. They came to the Whitesboro community in 1915, remaining here from that date. He died Nov. 20, 1932. On July 31, 1938, Mrs. Aiken married J. W. Bowers, who lived only nine months. His death occurred May 30, 1939. Since that time she has retained her residence here with a son or a daughter living with her until Oct. 1941, Mrs. Mary V. Evitt, her eldest daughter established permanent residence with her.

Until ill health prevented, Mrs. Aiken-Bowers was a constant worker in the Baptist church, of which she had been a member for 70 years. Until a short time ago she used no glasses except for reading and close work. She spent many hours reading, piecing quilts, knitting rugs, and gardening. Survivors include seven children, Mrs. Mary V. Evitt, Judson, Hulett, and Charlie Aiken of Whitesboro; S. P. Aiken of Grand Junction, Colo.; Mrs. Lucille Reynolds of Los Angeles, Calif.; and Cecil Aiken of Wellington, Kan.; 40 grandchildren, with six of the grandsons now in the U. S. armed forces, one of whom is now in foreign service and several in government work; 27 great-grandchildren; one brother, Ed Tate of Van Buren, Ark., a neice, Mrs. C. J. Collins of Sherman. Funeral services were conducted Thursday at 2: 30 p. m. at the Baptist church, with the pastor, Rev. Nat Farley, and Dr. J. A. Ellis of Sherman officiating. Interment was in Oakwood cemetery. Pall bearers were Bob Gaskin, A. F. Scheid, E. T. Allen, H. W. Sanford, Sam W. Senor, and L. L. Brune. A number of out of town people attended the service.
