Malwine Schwarz
MALVINE Worth was born in Vienna, the middle chid of three. Her mother and older sister, Klara, perished in the Holocaust.
Despite her lack of Jewish education she felt a very strong sense of pride in her faith. During the war she was deported to Theresienstadt. Her fitness and will to live helped her survive. She was overwhelmed to hear of her brother Joschy’s survival, saying that the best music she had ever heard was his snoring on the first night. She took her role as older sister and only surviving immediate family member as a major purpose in life.
She was instrumental in reuniting Joschy with his childhood sweetheart, Marianne, in 1948. She often referred to Marianne as her “twin sister-in-law”. The three of them arrived in Australia in 1952. Not long after her arrival, she met and married Louis Brodsky. In 1956, their only child, Karin, was born.
Malvine was apprenticed in her early teens to a seamstress but was exploited as cheap labour. Determined to stand on her own feet she taught herself the craft, exhibiting her great talent in pattern-making and dress design. Along with Joschy, she established a thriving clothing factory. She spent many long hours in her living room making patterns each season. After Louis’ death in 1967, she married Harry Worth in 1971. Together they joined B’nai B’rith’s Harmony unit and were extremely active members until Harry’s passing.
In her later years she visited an elderly gentleman in Montefiore, keeping him company and doing his chores long after she could barely make it to his room. When Montefiore opened in Caulfield, she was soon visiting and bringing chocolates to a number of residents on a regular basis.
Her charity was legendary. In addition to numerous donations, she often helped out friends and family in crisis, despite being on a pension.
Her home was a refuge for several of her own and Karin’s friends during difficult times. Karin married Tom in 1984 and they had two sons, Daniel and Adrian. Monday evenings brought large groups of people together at Malvine’s home. Until her 91st year, these meals often finished with her famous strudel or apricot dumplings while everyone was engaged in stimulating conversation.
Malvine always knew her own mind and valued her independence. She cheerfully carried the burden for others but refused to be a burden to anyone. Her family and many, many friends will sadly miss her wisdom, wit and strength, as well as her endearing smile.
