About Manoah Ellis

Biography

Manoah, son of Manoah Ellis, was born about 1682 and died after 2 December 1726. He married Elizabeth Atkins on 22 November 1710.[1] She was the daughter of Isaac and Mercy Atkins born perhaps about 1685, and died before 02 December 1726.[2]

In Court records,[2] there are cases which indicate that the father, Manoah, was probably deceased by 1703, and the son was a petitioner. One is the case of the Town of Harwich where "Munoa Ellis" and 5 other families petitioned to have a grant of the Town to settle a minister in the village of Manamoit. The belief is that if the father was still living, he would have been called "Sr." In a deed dated 01 Oct 1719, John Gray of Harwich conveyed to Manoah Ellis of Harwich, husbandman, land in Harwich which was originally called Quason's purchase. On 18 January 1725/6, at Harwich, Ephraim Covell testified that the previous spring he was told by Samuel Ellis that Ellis was arrested by Beriah Brodbrooks for putting up a fence on land where he lived, and Covell was hired to go with Ellis to John Gray to vindicate Ellis. Gray said, among other things, that Gray had sold the land to Manoah and he had paid for it. Covell also testified that the land that Manoah Ellis's house stood upon was within the bounds of William Chase's deed and that Ellis had lived on that land for about 13 years. Samuel Nickerson also testified at court that in 1718 he had seen Gray & Broadbrooks settle the bounds between their lands and that Ellis, being a near neighbor, had possession for 13 or 14 years.
