About María Francisca López de Brito y de la Coba

When their son purported to enter the University, an inquest was held on the “purity of blood” of the Avendaños and the Britos. Sworn witnesses testified that “both lines come from the oldest and most distinguished families of Cumaná and Margarita, in whose republics, since they were counted among the very first settlers and conquistadors, they have held the most important ecclesiastical, political, as well as military positions; for they were always known as true Christians, free from mixture with evil races, and were never affronted publicly. Besides, they were noble hidalgos, originally from Vizcaya and descendants from the manorial homes of their respective surnames, which may be found in the records of the Lords of Vizcaya.”
