A little while after her husband’s death, this entry appeared in the Hawkes Bay Weekly Times:

9th Sept 1867 – Nelson - Brutal assault by a Maori.

At an assembly at beach Roar, a most brutal assault by one of the Maoris named Ripena PARAMATEA, upon a women named MARARA, and her half cast child Arthur ELKINGTON. The arrest was made by Sgt NASH, both women and child are in hospital, with little hope being entertained of the child’s recovery.

Fortunately the child did recover and married Wetekia Ruruku from French Pass in 1893.
