About Marciana Echavez Lasam
Marciana Echavez-Lasam was supposed to have ten children, but three of them died before the second world war.
She became a grade one teacher at the age of 14 after she finished grade seven in 1920.
After marrying William Lasam Sr. a Radio Operator on March 4, 1928, and the death of her father Benito on March 12, 1928 they transferred to a small island of Siquijor, where her husband was assigned. Their first child Cesar died in Tolong Nuevo (Bayawan City). Would you believe that they walked from Tolong Viejo (today called Sta. Catalina) to Dumaguete for three days passing along the side of the sea. They brought with them a suitcase made of wood called caban and a mat. Thelma (1930-1994) was the second child born in Siquijor, she was a Pharmacist and died of kidney trouble. Next child was Dorcas "Doring" (1932-1996) a nurse in Los Angeles, USA, followed by the younger children.
The William Lasam family was once one of the richest in Butuan City, because they were famous for donating the electric post of the whole city of Butuan during the time of the late 1940s until the 1960s. Marciana was able to befriend with the former Vice President of the Philippines, Fernando Lopez, that's why they were able to get a license in a logging business.
Her younger sisters Gregoria and Flora used to live with her when they were little girls. That's why her sisters built up a life in Butuan, Mindanao.
