About Margaret Boyd, of Terregles
MARGARET BOYD
Sir John Herries and his wife Margaret had a charter confirming their possession of the barony of Terregles from David II, King of Scots, 1329-1371. The charter was issued on 15 March, in the twenty-ninth year of the king's reign, and this suggests that it may have been issued in 1358 or 1359. Margaret's family name is not identified in this charter, which is printed in full in the second volume of the Book of Carlaverock, and evidence which identifies it has not been found. The Book of Carlaverock II: charter number 14 on pp. 410-11
According to the Terregles MS., Sir John's wife was Margaret Boyd, the daughter of Lord Boyd, although the name of her father appears not to have been mentioned in these papers. The Scots Peerage IV: p. 400 Evidence that confirms her identity, or the relationship claimed for her, has not been found, and, consequently, it is not possible to say that she does actually belong to the Boyd family, or to identify her place in their family tree. The Scots Peerage IV: 400
A daughter named Margaret Boyd is not mentioned in the Scots Peerage account of the family of Boyd, Earl of Kilmarnock. The Scots Peerage V: pp. 136-82
NOTE FROM JIM WEBER
Many in World Connect have Margaret as a daughter of a Robert Boyd and Alice Giffard. According to Burke's Peerage, it was a Thomas Boyd who married Alice Gifford, and I have them born too late to be Margaret's parents. Therefore, I am making Margaret the daughter of Thomas (the Boyd who married Alice Gifford)'s father Thomas Gifford.
