About Margaret Carent

In some documents it calls Margaret the only sister of Baron John Stourton, and this may be because the others died young or were not full sisters.

  • Margaret STOURTON
  • Born: 1402, Witham, Somersetshire, England
  • Father: William De STOURTON (Sir Knight)
  • Mother: Elizabeth MOYNE
  • Married: William CARENT ABT 1423

  • CARENT, William (d.1476), of Toomer in Henstridge, Som.
  • s. and h. of William Carent by Alice, da. and event. h. of Sir John Toomer of Toomer. m. (1) bef. 1418, Margaret (d.1463), da. of William Stourton*, 1s. John†, 1da., (2) bef. Nov. 1468, Katherine (d. 20 Mar. 1473), da. of Thomas Payne of ‘Paynshay’, Devon by Margery, da. and h. of Peter Yeovilton of Speckington, Som., wid. of John Stourton I* of Preston Plucknett, Som., Sir John Beynton† of Hampreston, Dorset and William Wadham.2
  • ....His second wife, whom he married without royal licence (escaping lightly with a fine of only five marks), was possessed of 11 manors in Somerset (nearly all in the south of the county, near the Dorset border), which were mostly her dower from her first husband, John Stourton I, and lands in Wiltshire and Derbyshire, left her by another husband, Sir John Beynton.3
  • But if Carent’s lands — at least of his own inheritance — were not particularly substantial, his public service reveals him to have been influential in county affairs, both in Dorset and Somerset. Although clearly an able administrator, he probably owed his prominent position also to his close connexions with the Stourtons, especially when his brother-in-law (Sir) John Stourton II* came to enjoy a position of trust in the household of Henry VI and was raised to the peerage. Carent’s close relationship with his first wife’s family lasted from 1416 for upwards of 50 years. He acted as a feoffee of the estates and as executor of the will of his wife’s uncle, John Stourton of Preston Plucknett (whose widow he later married), receiving from him bequests of a black horse and £10 ‘for his labour and friendship’, and by 1431 he was also acting as feoffee for his brother-in-law the younger John, with whom he came to be associated not only in local affairs but also in matters of more general concern. Both Carent and Stourton appear in a list drawn up in the office of the privy seal in about June 1435 for Humphrey, duke of Gloucester, possibly for the purpose of raising loans, and in 1436 both men advanced £40 to the Crown to help equip an expedition to France. It was through Stourton that Carent became known to John Beaufort, duke of Somerset, whose wife was Stourton’s cousin. Carent was associated with Somerset at the latest by December 1439 when he was commissioned to take the muster of the duke’s retinue at Poole; and in July 1443 Somerset named him and Stourton among the trustees of some 13 manors in various counties, ‘to execute his will’. But although Stourton was a member of the King’s Council, Carent himself had little to do with government at the centre, apart from being summoned along with Stourton’s son, Sir William†, to represent Dorset in the great council called for 21 May 1455. Another contact in court circles was his own brother Nicholas, dean of Wells 1446-67, who was secretary to Queen Margaret by 1448 and remained in her employment until 1458. Yet during the crises of 1459-61 Carent seems to have followed the lead of his brother-in-law Lord Stourton, adopting an impartial stance as far as possible. He retained his place on the Dorset bench throughout, and showed himself ready to offer his services to the Yorkist regime when the time came.4 .... etc.
  • .... He was a member of the council of Bruton priory by March 1428; and is said to have been steward of Shaftesbury abbey, which is not unlikely for Margaret Stourton, his first wife’s aunt, was abbess there from 1423 to 1441, and on her death he was commissioned to take the fealty of her successor. .... A further indication of royal regard came in August 1448 when he was granted a licence to impark 80 acres of wood and 300 acres of farmland in Toomer and Henstridge and to enjoy rights of free warren there. It may be conjectured that Lord Stourton, then treasurer of the Household, prompted the ‘special grace’ shown here. .... etc.

  • STOURTON, William (d.1413), of Stourton, Wilts.
  • s. and h. of John Stourton of Stourton, prob. by his 1st w. Lettice; half-bro. of John I*. m. by 1398, Elizabeth, da. and coh. of Sir John Moigne* of Owermoigne, Dorset, by Joan, da. and h. of John Belvale, 1s. John Stourton II*, 1da.
  • .... Stourton’s sickness may well have been genuine, since he only survived for another three months, dying on 18 Sept. In his will, made on 20 July 1410, he had asked to be buried in the cloister of Witham priory. His body was to be wrapped only in a linen cloth: ‘corpusque mourn putridum, nudum sicut deus me projecit in mundo, ita nudum sepeliendum’. Nothing ceremonious was to be done, save that alms were to be distributed among poor men, and no provision for masses of requiem was to be made. To his son, John, he left two missals, a psalter, a gradual, a portiforium, a book of legends of English saints, and a book of physic, and to his daughter, Margaret (later the wife of William Carent* of Toomer) he bequeathed £200 for her dowry. ....etc.
  • William’s heir, John, proved a greater man than his father: in 1448 he was to join the peerage as the 1st Lord Stourton.

  • Sir William Stourton, Lord of the Manor of Stourton, Co. Wilts., son and heir of Sir John Stourton, of Preston, Co. Somerset, and of Stourton, Co. Wilts., by Catherine, his wife, daughter of Henry, Lord Beaumont, confirmed by Hoare's copy of the College of Arms pedigree and by Edmondson. Collins placed him as eldest son of Sir John Stourton, by his second wife, Jane, daughter of Ralph, Lord Basset. Harleian MS. 1074 shewed him as eldest son of John Stourton without giving his mother's name. John Stourton, of Preston, senior, described himself in his will as brother of William Stourton, son and heir of John Stourton, sometime Lord of Stourton. In the inscription to Edith Stourton's memory she is called "Editha Soror' Will'i Storton." He appears to have been one of her trustees of the Manor of Ashmore, Co. Dorset. Sir William Dugdale started his pedigree of the Stourton family with this Sir William Stourton, stating that the family was of great antiquity in Wiltshire, taking its denomination from the town of Stourton, and it from the river Stoure, on the bank whereof it was situated.
  • He had a remainder in his father's Preston Pluckenet property in tail, contingent on failure of issue of his father by Alice, his wife.

Testa de Nevile stated in effect that the Manor of Owre Moyne was held by Ralph Moyne, of the Lord the King, by serjeanty of his kitchen, as his ancestors had done from the time of Henry I., and also by serjeanty of purveying that which belonged to the kitchen of the Lord the King(t). • It was found by the Inquisition taken after the death of Sir William Stourton, in 1 Henry V., at Dunmow, Co. Essex, that Sir John Moigne, knight, had been seised of the Manor of Estanes ad Montem, Co. Essex, with the advowson of the church there, in his demesne as of fee, as being settled to him and his heirs for ever, and being so seised, he had granted that Lordship, Manor and Advowson to Elizabeth, his daughter, then wife of Sir William Stourton, to hold of the said Elizabeth and the heirs of her body lawfully issuing by her husband, William Stourton, and that on the 20th May, 21 Richard II., a license had been obtained from the King confirming the said grant, and the Inquisition proved that John Stourton was son and next heir of the said Elizabeth by Sir William Stourton. .... etc.

  • .... that his son, John Stourton, called "Junior" (afterwards Lord Stourton), presented on the 5th of January, 1427. The fact that in this entry John Stourton is called "Junior," supports our contention that John Stourton, of Preston and Brimpton, his uncle, described himself as "Senior" to distinguish himself from his nephew, John, 1st Lord Stourton.(*) .... etc. William, 2nd Lord Stourton, presented on the 29th of March, 1477, but his son, John, 3rd Lord Stourton (called by Newcourt a knight only), never presented. Of him, Newcourt stated that he, "dying about 1484, leaving Katherine, his widow, who, afterwards, marrying with John Brereton, Esq., together, with him, presented to the same in 1486," which was on the 21st July, 1486, when "John Brereton, Ar', and Dom' Katherina Sturton. uxor sua ratione custodise Franc', Dom' Sturton," by "virtue of the guardianship of Francis, (4th) Lord Stourton, his (Sir John, 3rd Lord Stourton's) son and heir (by the said Katherine, Lady Stourton), who dying in his minority, or, at least, without issue, Sir William, afterwards (5th) L[ord] Stourton, his (Sir John, 3rd Lord Stourton's) brother, became his heir," who, "whilst a kt. granted the advowson hereof, for two Turns, to the Abby of Titley near adjoyning, by virtue whereof, John Fan, and others, presented two of the Abbots thereof successively thereto, A. 1504(23rd Dec.) and 1520 (5th Dec.)," when, after a lapse, whereupon the Bishop of London presented 18th July, 1531, we find William, 7th Lord Stourton, presented, as the last of his family, 1st August, 1536, for he disposed of the Manor and Advowson by sale to Sir Ralph Warren, Alderman and Lord Mayor of London in 1536 and 1543.(+)

    • ii. — Margaret Stourton, only other child and daughter, married according to Edmondson "Sir William Carrant, of Tomber, (in the parish of Henstridge,) Co. Somerset, knight." Confirmed by Sir R. C. Hoare's copy of the College of Arms pedigree, and by Collin's pedigree, who says her husband's name was "William Clarent, or Carrent, of Tomber, Co. Somerset." • Carent, John, junior (1425-83); of Ash in Stour-Pain, Dorset, and of Toomer, Somerset. M.P. Dorset 1453-4, called "junior".
  • Son and heir of William Carent, MP (1395-1476), by Margaret (Stourton), and nephew of John Carent, sr., who d. leaving coheirs in 1478. Married (1) 1441 Jane dau. of Thomas Brooke of Weycroft, Devon, M.P., and (2) c1459, Margaret, widow of Nicholas Carew of Beddington, Surrevy, M.P., who survived him and d. 1503.
  • By Oct 1441 John junr. and Jane his wife had succeeded, on the death of Ralf Bushey, to Winterbourne-Houghton, which they had of the grant of Sir John Chidiok. One must assume that it was John senr. who was the eschr. in 1441, but it was John junr. who was sheriff, Som. and Dorset 1459-60; and as "of Ash" or as "junior" he is to be found on Dorset comns. from Dec 1460 onwards. Both senr. and junr. were electors for Dorset when William Carent was elected in 1450. It will probably be the uncle "senr." who was servant to the Duchess of Somerset 1458. Junior was pardoned on the roll 5 Feb 1462, with the other official Lancastrians, and 5 Feb 1472 and 20 Nov 1474. He was an elector again in Dorset, 1472.
  • Died just before 11 Jul 1483, when William Carent his son succeeded him.

  • TCP Stourton) refers to a pedigree of this family that commences with Botolph and says that it "was long ago disposed of by Round." The pedigree we show comes from BP1934 (Mowbray) and is assumed to be the one that is deemed by TCP to be insecure down to the Sir William who was alive in 1325.
  • Botulph de Stourton (a c1070)
  • m. Anne (dau of Godwin, Earl of Wessex and Kent)
    • 1. Sir Robert de Stourton
    • Collins reports that Robert's father was Sir Ralph (de) Stourton who "when William the Conqueror entered into the West, was among those who broke down the Sea-Walls of the Severn".
      • A. Sir William de Stourton
        • i. Sir Michael de Stourton
        • m. Mary Mauduit (dau of John, Lord Mauduit)
          • a. Sir John Stourton (dvp)
          • BP1934 suggests that Sir John's wife, Gracia, was daughter of Thomas, Lord Hungerford. However, as was kindly brought to our attention by a site visitor (APH, 19.03.06), the dates for any such Grace Hungerford do not match with Sir John's likely dates. Collins identifies John's wife merely as ...

              • (B) Sir William Stourton of Stourton (a 1325)
              • TCP reports that this William may well have been son of Ralph and that from this William "thereafter the pedigree is clear", although (as noted) there are some queries regarding some of the wives.
              • m. Joan Vernon (dau of Sir Richard Vernon of Horningham) named by TCP as just Joan
                • (i) Sir John Stourton of Stourton, Sheriff of Dorset and Somerset (a 1381)
