About Margaret Edith (Moreland) Weber
Margaret loved dancing. She danced to Lawrence Welk many times during his career in South Dakota, Ruskin Park, Lane, Miltown, etc. When she was in the 11th grade of high school she and some friends of hers dropped out of highschool and hopped onto a freight car train and rode that to California. She arrived on our Aunt Bernice's home in Oakland and Aunt Bernice called our Mom to let her Margaret was there and that she was sick, so our Dad got her a ticket home on train. Later she married Art Weber of Ethan, SD in June 1936. They lived in a farm house which didn't have electricity but she could put out the best dinners on that corn cob stove and baked the best bread. For a gal who had never lived on a farm, she became a pretty good farm wife. Later they moved to Hayward, California in 1938. Her daughter, Flora Jean was born in 1939 there. I lived with them in 1943. Later they moved back to SD in 1943 and Jerauld Weber was born in Mitchell. They moved to Ethan, SD and Art drove a semi-truck hauling eggs to California. Their next move was back to Hayward, CA. Later they moved to Roseburg, Oregon where Art had a Christmas tree ranch. After a few years they moved back to Hayward where they were living when Margaret became ill and later died. Art took her to Tijuana, MX for the experimental therapy, laetrile, to save her life, but to no avail. She is buried in the cemetery in Hayward.
Margaret loved to dance and sing. If there was a dance in the area, she found a way to get there. She danced to Lawrence Welk's band and many others that performed at the Dreamland Dance Hall in Mitchell, Forestburg, Lane and others. When just 17 she and some friends of hers hopped onto the railroad (freight) cars and rode it to California. She later arrived at our Aunt Bernice's and Uncle Ed's house in Oakland, CA. Later our Dad sent her a pass to return to Mitchell via the railroad, Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad. She later met Arthur F. Weber of Ethan and they were married at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell in 1936. Later they moved to Hayward, CA. where Flora Jean (Weber) Chancellor was born and in 1943 returned to Mitchell just before Jerauld Arthur Weber was born. Art drove a semi-truck and hauled eggs and produce to California before returning to California again in 1951 or thereabouts. They later moved to Roseburg, Oregon and had a Christmas Tree ranch for a few years, selling Christmas trees in the Hayward area until they returned to Hayward to live again. Margaret developed cancer and took treatments in Tejuana, MX. but too no avail. She died there in August of 1972 and was buried in Hayward, CA. Art later married a Lorraine ?? from Ethan, a lady he had known from years back. After Art died Lorraine moved to Oregon to live next to Flora Jean where she is still living in 2009 anyway. Flora Jean is a widow and has three children. Roxanna, John, and Anna Jean. Jerauld is still living in Portland, Oregon.
