About Margaret Hamilton, Countess of Hartfell

Lady Margaret Hamilton was born on 5 April 1598.1 She was the daughter of Thomas Hamilton, 1st Earl of Haddington and Margaret Foulis.1 She married by contract, firstly, David Carnegie, Lord Carnegie, son of David Carnegie, 1st Earl of Southesk and Margaret Lindsay, on 14 September 1613.1,2 She married, secondly, James Johnstone, 1st Earl of Hartfell, son of Sir James Johnstone of Johnstone and Sarah Maxwell, on 25 February 1646/47 at Holyrood Abbey, Edinburgh, Midlothian, ScotlandG.1 A contract for the marriage of Lady Margaret Hamilton and James Johnstone, 1st Earl of Hartfell was signed on 30 January 1646/47.1 She died before August 1652.1

From 14 September 1613, her married name became Carnegie. After her marriage, Lady Margaret Hamilton was styled as Countess of Hartfell on 25 February 1646/47. From 25 February 1646/47, her married name became Johnstone. Her last will was dated 4 July 1648.1
