Margaret Hamilton is the eldest daughter of Robert Hamilton of Barncluith. She had no brothers and succeeded her father. She died on 13 September 1648 Hamilton of Barncluith, pp. 221-23

In the Lanark sasine register Margaret Hamilton is identified as the daughter of Robert Hamilton of Barncluith, as the niece of John Hamilton of Barncluith, and as the spouse of James Hamilton of Barncluith.
