About Margaret Hitchcock/Hiscockes

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Sloper-1

"Margaret Sloper (or Sleeper) was probably born around 1563, based on her parents' marriage in that year. This was possibly in Steeple-Ashton, a small village about 4km east of the town of Trowbridge, Wiltshire, England, where her parents were married and may have lived after marriage, but it is much more likely that she was born after they had returned to her father's home village of Manton, where he would need to be, to continue to earn a living.
Manton was a small village on the western edge of the town of Marlborough, Wiltshire, England. Margaret's father was Simon Sloper, of Manton, and his parents were Nicholas Sloper and Agnes Disner. Margaret's mother was Maryen Wychfelde, born Maryen Bayly, of Steeple-Ashton, near Trowbridge, and she had married twice before marrying Margaret's father; first to William Pashon, then to John Wychfelde, which was her name at her marriage. [1] Margaret's parents were married at Steeple-Ashton on 03 Aug 1563. [2]

Although she appears to have generally been called Margaret, she most likely was originally named Margery, [3] as this is how she is referred to in the report "The Visitation Of Wiltshire, 1623".[4] This has, on page 94, a pedigree chart (see attached image) of the Hitchcock family which has the following entry, in Latin:
:Rob'tus 2 filius duxit Margeria filia Simonis Sloper of Mounton in Wilts.

This translates as:
:Robert the second son married Margery daughter of Simon Sloper of Manton in Wiltshire.
It would appear from this that, in 1623, Margaret was known as Margery, (or possibly by both names at various times), although the Latin for Margaret (Margreta) and Margery (Margeria) are very similar and could have been interchanged on the pedigree chart by mistake.

It also confirms that her father was from Manton, Wiltshire, England.
The 1623 Visitation also makes it clear that Simon Sloper's daughter married Robert Hitchcock (or Hiscocke, etc), not Richard as many family history researchers have assumed, or have accepted from other family trees. It should also be noted that the Hitchcock family members used an alias name of Chapman, aliases being quite common at this time, and some of the occasions when their name was recorded it was as Chapman alias Hitchcock, or they used either Chapman or Hitchcock.
It would appear highly likely therefore that Margaret/Margery Sloper married Robert Chapman alias Hitchcock, around 1580, in the church of St George Preshute, which served Manton and west Marlbrough.
It appears that Margaret and Robert produced 7 children, the first 4 being named in the Will of Mary Hitchcock 1570, and those born after 1569 are taken from FamilySearch genealogy records, generally with inadequate citations. They are: Ann (1581), Elizabeth (1583), John (1585), William (1587), James (1589), Simon (1591), and Maria (1593). [5]
Margaret's husband died of the plague in 1609, and was buried at St Marys, Marlborough [6]
However, no record of the death of Margaret has been found.

SOURCE CITATIONS

Little or no verifiable primary source material (eg parish records) has been found and sighted to confirm birth and marriage etc, and unless new records are discovered, much of the detail of this family will remain conjecture. Much of the material found during research consists of references to Family Trees, etc, created by member-supplied information and generally not having primary source citations.

SPOUSE ROBERT OR RICHARD?

No verifiable primary or contemporary source (eg parish records) has been found during this research to confirm the belief of some that Margaret married Richard not Robert. FamilySearch has in its user-supplied Family Trees, a Richard Hitchcock marrying Mawde Webb in Trowbridge in 1580, and at the same time marrying Margaret Sloper in All Cannings in 1580, neither of which is likely.

A rather creative answer to this problem has been proposed by some, that Margaret's spouse was Robert aka Richard (or Richardi), or that his name was actually Robert Richard Hitchcock. Again, there do not appear to be verifiable contemporary sources for this.

HERALDIC VISITATIONS OF COUNTIES

A sound source for at least some information which was presumably factual when recorded, is the Heraldic Visitations of all Counties of England, Wales and Ireland. Following is an inter-alia transcription of a Wikipedia article on this subject: Heraldic visitations were tours of inspection undertaken by Kings of Arms (and more often by junior officers, or Heralds, as deputies) throughout England, Wales and Ireland. Their purpose was to regulate and register the coats of arms of nobility and gentry, and to record pedigrees. They took place from 1530 to 1688, and their records (akin to an upper-class census) provide important source material for historians and genealogists. In Wiltshire a visitation took place in 1565, and another in 1623, both of which provide useful, factual information.

ALIASES

As mentioned in the biography above, many members of the Hitchcock family used the alias, Chapman, with the surname, and the reason is not clear from the records sighted. Interestingly, FamilySearch notes in an article on the subject that the presumption seems to be that an alias was primarily used to conceal or disguise an identity; quite the opposite case was true in earlier times, when the intention seemed to be to legally identify one individual from another. The period during which aliases were most used in the U.K. coincided with the development of surnames, approximately 1460 to 1650. [7]

PRESHUTE

Preshute, the homeland of the Hitchcock family, is a civil parish immediately west and northwest of Marlborough in Wiltshire, England. Unusually for a Wiltshire parish, it does not take its name from any town or village. Up until the early 20th century the parish included the villages of Manton and the Anglican church of St George, Preshute, both of which are now officially part of Marlborough.
