About Margaret Lyon

MARGARET LYON (aka MARGARET LYOUNE)

Spurious Pedigrees

1

According to the Glasgow historian, John McUre, Archibald Lyon, Merchant in Glasgow, and his wife Margaret Dunlop, had a daughter named Mary Lyon who married Colin Campbell, Merchant in Glasgow. This is wrong, however. It was actually Margaret Lyon, here treated, who married Colin Campbell, and became the mother of Colin Campbell of Elie, Provost of Glasgow. History of Glasgow: 102

2

As previously mentioned, It has been claimed that Margaret Lyon, here treated, is the daughter of Archibald Lyon but no proof has been offered. History of Glasgow Baronetage and Knightage In this regard it should be noticed, however, that Archibald Lyon had no sons to succeed him when he died in 1587, and, consequently, all of his property in Glasgow passed to his three surviving daughters, Marion, Jonet and Helen Lyon. Glasgow Protocols It would appear, therefore, that Margaret Lyon was not actually the daughter of Archibald Lyon. Certainly, she did not succeed to any of Archibald’s property in Glasgow, and evidence which can confirm, or might otherwise tend to suggest that one of her children inherited in place of her has not been found
