There is little known about Peyton's first wife, Margret Martha Mhoon. We know she was probably born 1815 due to her age on the 1850 census. There is no clear date of death. However, We know her last child was born in 1851, This is confirmed by Thomas Jefferson Bass' death certificate listing his mother a Margaret M Mhoon.

Martha married Peyton Marion Bass about 1835 in Williamson, Tennessee. Based upon census data, they had seven children: Benjamin Franklin born 1836, James Madison born 1839, Drury Washington born 1841, Monroe R born 1843, Martha Fredonia "Donie" born about 1849, Mary Parilee born 1848, and Margret's last child Thomas Jefferson Bass born 1851 in Smith Township, Dallas, Arkansas, United States..

Four years after Thomas' birth his 36 year old father Peyton married 18 year old Frances Elizabeth Underwood in Smith Township, Dallas, Arkansas, United States on Dec 12 1855. It is assumed that Margaret had died and was buried about 1854 in Arkansas leaving Peyton a widower with many young children to manage.
