About Margaret Maughan
Margaret Maughan was left paralysed from the waist down and unable to walk in a road accident in Malawi in 1959. She was treated at at Stoke Mandeville Hospital where spinal injury unit founder Dr. Ludwig Guttmann pioneered the use of sport in therapy. Whilst she was there she took up archery and joined an archery club.
The hospital had been the site of the Stoke Mandeville Games, a sports competition for wheelchair athletes which subsequently developed into the Paralympic Games.

- Biography
- Margaret has the distinction of winning Britain’s first Paralympic Gold medal at the inaugural Paralympic Games in Rome 1960 in Archery. She competed at a further 4 Paralympic Games.
Margaret was also the first English lady to win a FITA star, which means shooting over 1000 score in a FITA event. She won the Sports Journalists Award for the disabled sports personality of the year in 1971 and a Lifetime Achievement Award from Wheelpower in 1999.
After she finished competing Margaret was secretary of the Stoke Mandeville Lawn Bowls Association, secretary of the British Wheelchair Bowls Association and was involved with the organisation of the Inter Spinal Unit Games, also at Stoke Mandeville.
Margaret currently lives in Hertfordshire.
