About Margaret M McDowell
In the 1850 census she was 7, in her parents' household in LaRue County, Kentucky, and had attended school in the year. The 1860 census listed her as 16, in her parents' household in LaRue County, and born in Kentucky.
On 8 April 1868, Margaret was deeded 36.5 acres of land on South Fork by her father Robert Hodgen Thomas, having paid him $400.
In the 1870 census she was 27 and keeping house in her husband's household in LaRue County. The 1880 census listed her as 37 and keeping house in her husband's household in LaRue County. In the 1900 census of LaRue County she was 59 and in her husband's household. They had been married for 36 years, and 4 of 5 children were still living. She was able to read and write.
She is buried with her husband in the South Fork Baptist Cemetery.
Letitia (Miller) Thomas would have been 49 when Margaret was born — a rare occurrence for the time. Is it possible that Ann, the eldest daughter of Robert and Letitia, was really Margaret's mother? And the family raised Margaret as Letitia's and Robert's daughter rather than granddaughter?
