Margaret Fry Bell was born in Belfast, County Antrim, Ireland in 1742 the daughter of Robert and Agnes (Fleming) Bell.
Margaret was the third child and the oldest daughter of the eleven children born to Robert and Agnes.
Margaret, her two older brothers, and her parents immigrated to the United States from Ireland in 1844.
She married Daniel Shawhan, Jr. in 1762 when she was 20 years old. Margaret was described as "having hair like the sunset, filled with red and gold".
Margaret and Daniel, per reports and records of Robt. E. Francis (a Shawhan family historian), had 11 children during their marriage. The known names for the children are as follow.
