About Margaret Aldrich Smith
Daughter of William Thomas Sampson and Margaret Sexton (Aldrich) Sampson
"Cooperstown friends received intelligence Wednesday afternoon of the sudden death at Newport, R. I., of Mrs. Margaret S. Smith, wife of Captain Roy Campbell Smith, of the United States navy and a member of the Naval War College staff at Newport. It is understood here that Mrs. Smith dropped dead while walking along the street at Newport with her daughter, Mrs. Spottswood D. Bowers, of New York and Cooperstown. While it was known to the family that she was suffering from a heart ailment, her condition was not thought to be serious. Captain and Mrs. Smith have been summer visitors in Cooperstown many years and the body was brought here Thursday and the funeral held from Christ church Friday morning at 11 o'clock., the Rev. Father Miles Lowell Yates officiating and interment in the Campbell plot at Lakewood cemetery. Mrs. Smith was the daughter of Rear Admiral William T. Sampson, United States navy, commander in chief of the Atlantic fleet during the Spanish American war. Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband, two sons, Lieutenant Commander Roy C. Smith, Jr., of the naval torpedo station and Sampson Smith, of Short Hills, N. J., and by one daughter, Mrs. Spottswood D. Bowers, of New York, both members of the summer colony here."
