About Margaret Spillane (Maloney)
Margaret was born in 1865 in Shrewsbury, Vermont during the Civil War. Her parents Edward Maloney (Moloney) and Bridget Flanigan Maloney had left Memphis to get away from the fighting in Tennessee and stay with Edward's family in Vermont. Edward had sisters Margaret and Hanora who were married to brothers Patrick and Richard (respectively)Lloyd, all living in Vermont. Edward and Bridget also had one year old daughter Mary with them.
Edward and Bridget had a son Danny born in 1869. He died of scarlet fever in 1877. Edward and Bridget also died young, and sisters Mary and Margaret had a miserable childhood living with relatives. The 1880 census shows Mary Maloney living with the family of Kate Bender. Kate was a sister of Bridget. Shelby County records show a Mrs. B. Maloney dying at the age of 29 in Memphis on October 15, 1873 in a deadly yellow fever epidemic. Thousands of Memphis residents died in the 1873 and 1878 outbreaks.
