About Margaret Whitt

Margaret “Peggy” White married Robert Whitt, son of her aunt, Nancy White and her husband, Robert Whitt. The Whitt family, as the Whites, first touched America’s shores in the 1600’s.

Robert Whitt Sr. and his wife Nancy, daughter of John White (I) and Patience “Biddy” Mills, were married in Montgomery, VA, in 1793. By the time they set out for Ohio, their children were nearly grown. Robert Jr. stayed behind and married his cousin, Peggy in Logan, West Virginia.

Robert Whitt was family. He farmed right beside Peggy’s brothers. Over the years, there were at least 10 children born, that were mentioned in the Federal Census:

. Girl Whitt (1821-1825 bef. 1830)
. Amelda Whitt (1825 aft. 1852)
. Mary Whitt (1828-1881) per death record
. James Whitt (1835-bef. 1880)
. Son Whitt (1835-1839 before 1840)
. Gordon Whitt (1839- ?)
. Henry Whitt (1841-aft.1910)
. Peggy Whitt (1844-
. Elizabeth Whitt (1846-bef. 1888)
. Emily Whitt (1849-abt. 1880)

Thc Civil War had come and gone, leaving destruction of land and lives.

As Robert and Peggy’s lives were drawing to a close, they had lived to see many transformations from the way they had lived during the earlier ¾’s of a century. The American frontier, was vanishing. People could move freely across the prairie without encountering Indian marauders. Logan, was now connected to a railway. Farmers’ goods, and coal from the local mines, were now being transported across a nation. Though the country was still moving by horse and wagon; hay and feed remained a large part of the economy in Logan and elsewhere. Farm machinery had come a long away and was doing more and more.to lessen a farmers back- breaking load. Ready-made clothing and steel production was booming. They had to be amazed.

Margaret “Peggy” White and Robert Whitt seemed to have vanished after 1880. As information is found, this page will be updated.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Apr 17 2022, 8:05:57 UTC
