About Margaretta Forten
Margaretta Forten was secretary of the Female Anti-Slavery Society in Philadelphia in 1845. Her parents, brothers, and sisters were all abolitionists. Margaretta was the daughter of a free-born African-American.

Teacher, abolitionist, suffragist. With her mother and sisters Harriet and Sarah, she was a founding member of the bi-racial Philadelphia Female Anti-Slavery Society, of which she served as an officer throughout its history. She taught for at least thirty years; during the 1840s she taught at a school run by Sarah Mapps Douglass, and in 1850 she opened her own school.
