Berthold Bodenheimer is first registered in Rotterdam in September 1908. He is then 23 years old. He had sought his luck in Antwerp before, so he must have left his birthplace Waibstadt in Baden (Germany) at a young age. A year later on 8 September 1909, he married the 17-year-old Catholic Maria Hermina Corbuly. She is the daughter of his landlady and we can assume that there was a forced marriage. Three months later, on December 27, 1909, their son Walter Rudolf is born. Maria was therefore pregnant for quite some time during the wedding. Because Berthold only moved to the address on 11 May 1909 and Maria and her mother had settled there only 8 days earlier on 3 May 1909, coming from Vienna, it is not possible that Berthold and Maria knew each other before the beginning of May. We can therefore conclude that the child was born more than prematurely. The child dies after six weeks on 13 February 1910.

Mary is not doing well afterwards. That may have something to do with her son's death, but we don't know that for sure. Since their marriage, Berthold and Maria officially lived on the floor of the house at 1e Middellandstraat 114a and mother Eugenia Corbuly-Vinchelhoffer (also written as Korbuly-Winkelhofer) on the ground floor or ground floor. Maria's brother, Alexander, also lives there for 5 months but leaves for Vienna in April. The possible reason for his stay was the arrival of the baby. Mother Eugenia continues to live at this address until her death on February 17, 1918. We know from the address lists that she was at least a period of this 9-year-old boarding house from a house on Jan Porcellisstraat. It must therefore have had some capital.

On 15 November 1911 Maria was admitted to the Maasoord mental institution in Portugaal (nowadays Delta Psychiatric Center). She returns home on March 2, 1912. Highly pregnant, because on May 26, 1912 she gives birth to her daughter Julia. Five years later, on 14 June 1917, Maria was admitted to Maasoord again. The treatment, insofar as there was any question, does not last long because on September 1, 1917 she is discharged again and she returns home. Apparently they also saw no salvation for Maria in Maasoord. On September 7, 1917, she died 25 years old. More than 5 months later her mother would die too. Berthold is then alone with his daughter.
