At the time of her Marriage, Maria was aged 19 years and from the farm ' Rondehoek ' in the District of Harrismith. After their marriage they moved to the farm ' Waterval ' in the Vrede District. Maria battled for a few years after the Boer war to try and re- establish the farm but in 1907 she sold the farm and moved to live on the nearby farm ' Bavaria '
Maria took on washing and ironing to earn a living. At the beginning of the Boer War she was a widow with 6 minor children, one son and five daughters
