Marie Jahoda, in 1958, devised a list of characteristics which are present in the majority of people who are regarded as normal. Known as Ideal Mental Health, these were:

- • Voluntary control of behaviour

- • Sustaining relationships and giving affection
- • Self-direction and productivity
