Marie was a Fille du roi [daughter of the king], one of over 800 hand-picked "mail-order brides" sent to Québec under royal patronage, to meet & marry a local man and to have as many children as possible, in order to populate the colony. These women came from all social classes in France, from country girls raised on farms to the daughters of French aristocrats or wealthy merchants. They were interviewed and approved by the Catholic Church as morally and physically fit, given a clothing allowance and a small dowry, and crossed the Atlantic Ocean to Canada to meet their future husbands.
