Her Testament Dative and Inventory
David Makgill of Cranstoun-Riddell gave up the Testament Dative and Inventory of his deceased mother, Marie Sinclair, on 28 June 1609. His mother is identified as the widow of: "ane honoll man Mr David Makgill of Cranstoun-Riddell ane of the ordinair senators of the College of Justice." Confirmation was granted to him on the same day. Evidence from the National Records of Scotland
6 December 1585: Charter under the Great Seal of Scotland by which James VI, King of Scots, confirms that he has given possession of the lands and barony of Cranstoun-Riddell, in the Sheriffdom of Edinburgh, together with the lands of Nisbet in the Constabulary of Haddington, to Master David McGill of Nisbet, the king's advocate, and his wife Marie Sinclare. David McGill of Nisbet, is identified as the eldest son of Master David McGill and his deceased wife Elspetam Forrestare. Marie Sinclare is identified as the eldest daughter of Sir William Sinclare of Hirdmestoun and his wife Sibillam Cokburne. The lands in question had previously been resigned by Master David McGill, senior, whose charter in favour of his eldest son followed from a marriage contract dated 10 September 1585.
