About Marion Chalmers of Gadgirth
Marion Chalmers of Gadgirth Ayrshire was the daughter of Sir John Chalmers of Gadgirth and Elizabeth Hamilton of Cadzow (daughter of James Hamilton 5th of Cadzow and 1st Lord Hamilton).
Marion, Lady Stair was summoned before the King's Council in 1494 to face charges of heresy as she was one of the Lollards of Kyle (who were followers of John Wycliffe who illegally translated the bible into English and were opposed to the Roman catholic church). King James IV dismissed the charges with contempt. This was the first recorded connection between Scottish Protestantism and the Dalrymple family - a link that was maintained for several centuries, most notably under Sir James Dalrymple 1st Viscount Stair.
Marion Chalmers parents married c.1440.
