Tilden, Marmaduke, Jr. (1883-1957) ARCHITECT

The Athenaeum of Philadelphia University of Pennsylvania Architectural Archives Philadelphia Historical Commission Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission Born: 2/19/1883, Died: 10/31/1957 Marmaduke Tilden, Jr., was born in New York City, the son of Marmaduke and Anna M. Price Tilden. After graduating from St. Mark's School in Southboro, MA, in 1901, he entered Harvard University, where he graduated with honors in the fine arts in 1905. From l9O5 to 1907 he studied in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, chiefly in the ateliers of Chifflot and Aubertin. By 1907 he was in Philadelphia and working for Cope & Stewardson, where he would remain through 1912, when he became part of the firm of Bissell & Sinkler. In October, 1913, the firm name was changed to recognize Tilden as a full partner, and Bissell, Sinkler & Tilden sustained operation until 1916. In that year Tilden formed yet another firm with H. Bartol Register, under the name of Tilden & Register. This firm continued until 1926, when George Wharton Pepper, Jr. became a partner, and the name was revised to Tilden, Register & Pepper. After Register withdrew in 1936, Tilden & Pepper continued in operation until approximately 1941. Tilden then worked independently until 1946 when he was advised by his physician to retire. However, a reference to Wigham & Tilden appears in the Philadelphia telephone directories from 1947 to 1952,leading to the suspician that Tilden indeed did not retire; he simply took on a partner. The list of works with which Tilden was associated during his long career reveals a practice heavily weighted in the area of residential design with several large commissions coming from hospital work, such as that for the Abington Hospital in Abington, PA, and the Martin Maloney Clinic at the University of Pennsylvania. Marmaduke Tilden, Jr., became a member of the AIA in 1912 and also held memberships in the T-Square Club and the Pennsylvania Society of Architects. From 1941-42 he was one of the supervising architects for the Pentagon. After his retirement in 1946 he pursued his hobby of painting.
