Bio Written by Lula May Adams Backus Martha Ann Field was born 22 Sep 1844 in Barnsly, Yorkshire, England. Daughter of George and Hannah Johnson Field. She married James Adams. They heard about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and she was very interested. It offered something she was looking for and she was willing to give up everything they had to follow their belief. When her husband was called on a mission she was willing to put her shoulder to the wheel and keep things going while he went back home to take the gospel to others. She always had the desire to do geneology work and get her records up to date. With alot of hard work and not a very easy way to get things done she died before she got much done. She had her mother and fathers work done and sealed to them. She died 4 Oct 1910 after living 6 weeks from a stroke. She had six children, Mary Hannah, James William, George John, Florence May, Clare and Martha. Martha died at the age of 5 from Diphtheria..
[(another story written by Lula May Adams Backus) almost a continuation of the first history we found]. Here I'll tell what little I know of Martha Ann Field. She was born 22 Sep 1844 to George Field and Hannah Johnson Brown. Knowing nothing of ther life before she married James Adams. If anyone has or know any thing of her childhood I would like to know of it. She was a wonderful woman and with her faith and her work, she raised her family and to see them all married except her baby girl who at the age of five died of Diptheria. Aunt Clara Loveless nearly died with the same disease. When James and Martha moved to Mona, Utah, she was asked if James could marry another woman. She said yes, but she wouldn't live with him too. It was either her or the other woman. The bishop told her she had to consent to the second wife. She called him a damned liar. Bishop Kay then went to the Stake President and told him he should excommuicate her from the church, but the President told Bishop Kay to leave her alone. If she could not see living a plural marriage it was her business. It was at this time when they left Mona and came to Provo Bench. While in Mona, Clara Jane was born 4 May 1882. Martha Ann the last child was born after they came to Provo Bench. I don't have that date When Grandpa was called on a mission in 1900 she took over the farm work and all that goes along with it. Picking berries, currents and saving every cent to help keep James on his mission. Her one desire was to get enough money to do geneology work, but she never did get it done as she had a stroke and only lived 6 weeks but she talked of it to my mother Mae Adams before she died. What I remember of her was how she would put on her bonnet at day break and stayed in the fields all day doing what had to be done.
