About Martha Beamsley

Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hallor-1

Martha Hallor's date/place of birth and parents are unknown. She was the widow of Edward Bushnell and second wife of William Beamsley.[1][2][3] She was probably born about 1607 (based on date of first marriage and age of husband). Her origins may be in Sussex, England, as that is where she was married and where four of her 5 children were born.

Martha Hallor married Edmund Bushnell on 2 Aug 1627 in Horsham, West Sussex, England and had five children, as follows:[2][4]

  1. Edmund, baptized at Horsham 16 Sept 1628, buried there 27 Jan 1628/9;
  2. Edward, baptized at Horsham 10 Dec 1629, mentioned in will of his step-father William Beamsley Sept 1658, no further record found;
  3. Elizabeth, baptized at Horsham, 2 April 1632, married about 1652 Edward Page of Boston and had 7 children;
  4. Francis, baptized Horsham 16 March 1633/4, buried there 5 May 1635;
  5. Mary, born at Ten Hills Farm, Medford, Massachusetts, June 1636, baptized in Boston, 17 Feb 1638/9, "mentioned as Mary Robinson in the will of her step-father William Beamsley 14 Sept 1658", married at Boston 3 Oct 1657 George Robinson, married (2) Thomas Dennis.[4]

Martha and Edmund Bushnell, with their surviving children Edward and Elizabeth, came to New England in 1635. Edmund Bushnell worked for John Winthrop, Jr., son of Gov. Winthrop, managing his Ten Hills Farms in Medford, Massachusetts. Edmund Bushnell died at Ten Hills Farms on 28 March 1636.[4]

On 23 Jan 1636/37, "___ Bushnall, widow" was granted a house lot and garden and on 19 Feb 1637/38 "Martha Bushenall, widow" received a great lot "for five heads". On 3 Feb 1639 "Martha Bushnall Widow", was admitted to the church in Boston.[2]

Martha married second, about 1644 at Boston, to William Beamsley.[1][4] William and Martha had one child:[1][3]

  1. Abigail, born 8 Feb, 1645/6, baptized same day, prob. d.bef.1658 as she was not named in her father's will.[5]

William Beamsley died at Boston, Massachusetts, on 29 Sep 1658.[1]

Widow Martha Beamsley received approval from the court on 12 June 1663, in answer to her application for a license to distill and retail strong waters, and posted a bond "for the keeping of due order".[1]

Martha's date and place of death are unknown. The heirs of William Beamsley sold his house lot in Boston on 16 Nov 1668, presumably after the death of his widow, Martha, who had been given that property for her lifetime in William's will.[1][3]
