Obituary - The Gospel Messenger, Butler Ga. . May 1893, vol 15 no 5.

Mrs Mattie Middlebrooks; It was just as the Golden rays of sunlight crept up from behind the Eastern Horizon, Oct 14, 1892 , that the angel of life came and carried aunt Mat to her long sought home. I say aunt Mat ,because all who knew her, called her aunt. Aunt Mat was born in Bibb Co. Ga. March 3, 1827, making her stay here 65 years. At the age of 26 ,she married a William Ingram , a widower with 3 children, she was a true and devoted wife, and an affectionate step-mother. At Mr. Ingrams death ,she was left destitute, and thru all the Civil war, she toiled for herself and children, at the age of 42, she married Reuben Middlebrooks, with whom she lived untill her death, she has two children living to mourn her departure, besides her husband and a host of friends and relatives , but we feel like our loss is her eternal gain, At Last she is freed from this sinful word and gone to her dear Jesus. Aunt Matt.lived with the missionary baptists from early girlhood, until the second Saturday in August 1891, when she with her husband, were unitied to the primitive baptists at Salem Church, in Crawford co, Ga.and was baptized the next morning by Elder Isiah Grant, she said she never felt at home until she got to Salem, on the second Saturday morn in Sept. 1892 ,being her meeting day,and she being feeble, her husband advised her to stay home, but she told him she flet like it would be the last time in life and went to church, and on the following Monday, she was stricken down with Tyfoid fever, when she lingered for 5 weeks, and bore her sufferings with true christen fortitude. I was around her bed side a great deal while she was ill, but I never heard a murmur, she prayed to die easy, just before the last, she threw up her hands and exclaimed, " oh how lovely"and tried to show us the glory, the poor weathered- beaten form was almost exhauste as she cried out, "My way is clear, I see the light look at the sweet little Angels" then she slumbered on, til she finally closed her eyes, to wake in Heaven in joyful days, and sing her redemmers praise, We would say to the grif stricken husband and children, Cheer up. her remains now rest in Salems Cemetery, her friends pay her their last tribute of respect by placing her nicely away, to rest on until the resurection mor where we hope to meet her again and know we are known, by and by. yours in love Ceres Ga. Minnie Harris.
