John enlisted in CO C 17th VA Cavalry (CSA) August 25, 1862 at Hillsboro, VA. He was taken prisoner in Nicholas County November 16, 1863 and received at Camp Chase in Ohio November 28, 1863. He was transferred to Fort Delaware February 29, 1864.
The couple moved from Nicholas County VA to Roane County VA (WV) about 1861.
