Martha Margaret McKee

Biography

Martha was born in 1759. She passed away in 1836.

Her family lived in Scotland then for some time lived in Ulster, Ireland. From here they left for America. Martha Hoge (Robert) b. Dec. 1759, in Tuscarora Valley, Juniata Co. Pa. d. July 1836, near Butler, Pa. She m. in 1778, Thomas McKee, b. 1749in County Down, Ireland, d. 1814, in Butler County, Penn. He came to America in 1774 and located in the Juniata Settlement. At the commencement of the struggle for Independence, he entered the service, and was under Morgan in the Southern campaign, in the Pennsylvania company attached to the corps of that brave partisan leader. His canteen and powder horn, carried through the war, are in the possession of his grandson Lieut. Col. J. Cooper McKee, Surgeon, U.S.A. In 1795 the family removed to Allegheny County, Penn. and the year following 1796 permanently settled on a farm near Butler, Butler County, that state. They had an issue (surname McKee)

Mrs. McKee became widely known in the famous Gray land suit, in which she was the principal witness. Her last years were spent with her daughter Mary, wife of James McKee
