Richard and Martha Spratlen Pell came to Nebraska by covered wagon from St. Joseph, Missouri in 1853. The family arrived in Otoe County a year before it was legal for settlers to enter the Nebraska Territory. It is true that the Pells, along with a few other families, jumped the gun on legal entry, but by 1854 when they moved to Cass County they established a legal claim near Union, secured with a special government dispensation, which Richard Pell had received for serving in the U.S. Army as a young man. There were a number of other Spratlin / Spratlen families in Cass Co. as of the 1860 census. This according to Gertrude True Wood
